The Canon EOS 350D, released in 2005, is more a ground-up redesign than an upgrade to its groundbreaking predecessor, the EOS 300D. New features include white balance correction options and a monochrome mode. The metal EF-S mount was retained, so any EF as well as the specialized EF-S lenses can be used.
For a camera first released several years ago, its 8-megapixel resolution remains competitive. Fast write times to CompactFlash, long battery life, and solid construction. Overall, a great value — if you can still find one on sale.

Why would I (or you) choose the 350D over the 20D? For me, the primary factors were the small size, light weight, and price. As someone that plans to carry the camera for extended time periods on hikes, and other travels, the Canon 350D, seemed to be a better choice.
